June 13th, 2020 marked one year in operation for the coffee bar. At Bootstrap’s inception, we made it our aim to cultivate community through the craft of coffee. Part and parcel with this goal is the pursuit of justice (social, economic and environmental). And this mission still informs everything we do- how we source our coffees, our choice to use compostable take-out packaging, the benefits we offer to staff, and how we interact with every guest.
The events of this spring and summer have called us to redouble our commitment to this mission. Amidst the hardships brought on by COVID-19, the Twin Cities have been rocked by the killing of George Floyd at the hands of local police. The systemic racism and inequalities still present in our beloved state have been laid bare for the world to see. At Bootstrap, we have been doing a great deal of soul searching and research about how we can and must use our position in the community to help bring about social and economic justice for all.
So, for the entire month of July, Bootstrap commits to donate 5% of all sales (wholesale, online and coffee bar) to organizations fighting systemic racism and police brutality here in our community. Each member of our staff has chosen an organization to receive part of our donation. The organizations chosen are:
Minneapolis Sanctuary Movement
Twin Cities Coalition for Justice for Jamar
Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective
Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery
We encourage you to consider donating to one or more of these organizations. They are doing very important work, and joining us in donating will only amplify that work!
Though our 5% donation goes through the end of July, this will, of course, not be the end of our commitment to the fight for social and racial justice. We will continue to be active in our community and use our time and resources to support these causes.
Thank you all for your continued support and for your friendship. We love and value each of you and are so happy to serve you!
Much love and many thanks,
The Bootstrap Crew
