Around late Summer and early Fall, fresh coffees from Central America start making their appearances. Over the last five years, we have had the privilege of bringing in coffees from the amazing group of farmers called Gold Mountain Coffee Growers. They were founded in 2002 by Benjamin Weiner who, while working on a thesis paper dealing with the economics of coffee growing in Nicaragua, decided to purchase a farm and join a cooperative. Shortly after becoming a member of the co-op, he became aware that farmers needed a more direct way to reach out to roasters and gain the needed profitability to have a successful coffee business. From that recognized need, Gold Mountain Coffee Growers was born.  The group has since grown and developed into a social enterprise that connects farmers and coffee roasters while implementing a rigorous quality control program and a transparency which ensures prices for farmers that allow them to earn a livable wage through high quality coffee.

Last year we selected the microlot from Josefina and Mario’s farm, El Divino Niño, and were so impressed with the coffee that we had to have it on our menu again this year! Their family has lived on their plot of the mountain since 1985 alongside a small waterfall that never dries up. On this remote plot, they grow two varieties of coffee: Caturra Estrella and Catuai. The Gold Mountain Coffee Growers team fondly call the coffee from their farm “Yellow Peach” for its lightly peachy notes they find in the coffee year after year.  Because of the remote location, the coffee has to be carried off the farm by horseback. Although challenging to get, it’s well worth it for the unique (for this region) flavor!  When we tasted the coffee, we found notes of mango, nectarine, and Meyer lemon with a light macadamia nut note. Overall we find the coffee to be tangy, nectary, and delicious! This is an exceptional washed coffee that pushes what quality coffee from Nicaragua can look like! All coffees are available in whole bean only.
