This coffee comes from the Kiamugumo Coffee Factory in Kenya. A coffee factory operates much like a washing station does, purchasing coffee from local farmers and processing the coffee for sale. Kiamugumo was founded by the New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society in the 1970’s. There are about 1,500 contributing members who deliver coffee cherries to the factory, each growing coffee alongside other crops with an average of an 1/8th a hectare per farm.

Kenya has an interesting and complicated coffee history. Although it shares a border with the oldest known place to grow coffee - Ethiopia - it is one of the newest origins for coffee production. The lineage of the coffee trees is vastly different from that of the many coffee trees in Ethiopia, with a long and winding historical trail that has coffee trees from the island of Bourbon - now Reunion - being transplanted to Kenya for a cash crop. In the 1930’s an auction system was established. Much of the coffee in Kenya is sold at auction through the Nairobi Coffee Exchange. These are auctions that are held on Tuesdays and traders by small lots of coffee. This process can be rather intense, as buyers could be cupping through hundreds of coffees while bidding to secure coffees. That is how this coffee was sourced.

When tasting the coffee we noted the big and syrupy body with sugary flavors of buttered caramel and peach cobbler. This is a really tasty coffee that is great hot or cold and for any occasion. Enjoy!

All coffees are available in whole bean only.
